Herpes is a virus caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It exists in two forms, including oral and genital herpes. Both variations result in cold sores around the mouth, face, or genitals. It is spread through skin-to-skin contact with infected areas, most often during vaginal, oral, and anal sex, as well as kissing. Herpes blisters are often itchy and/or painful, coming and going until one receives treatment.
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that results from an infection with the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. This bacteria infects the mucous membranes in the reproductive tract. This includes the cervix, fallopian tubes, and uterus in women, and the urethra in both men and women. Gonorrhea is often passed from one person to the next during sexual contact, including vaginal, oral, and anal sex.
Chlamydia is one of the more common STDs, causing infection in both men and women. When left untreated, chlamydia is capable of causing permanent damage to a woman’s reproductive system. In turn, it can be difficult to impossible to conceive. Caused by an infection with Chlamydia trachomatis, this STD can present several symptoms such as pain during sex, painful urination, bleeding between periods, and more.
Syphilis is an STI or sexually transmitted infection that can cause prolonged health issues if left untreated. When one becomes infected, syphilis develops in stages, ranging from primary and secondary to latent and tertiary–each with its own signs and symptoms. This STI is typically spread through sexual contact, beginning as a painless sore, typically located on the genitals. More often than not, the person infected with this STI is unaware.
HIV or human immunodeficiency virus is a threatening virus that attacks the body’s immune system. Often confused for AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, this virus can ultimately lead to AIDS if treatment isn’t sought accordingly. Because HIV infects the cells that combat infection, people with this disease are more prone to illness and often take it harder than others. In terms of symptoms, many HIV symptoms are flu-like.
Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver–the vital organ responsible for filtering the blood, processing nutrients, and fighting infections. When the liver is damaged or inflamed, its overall function can ultimately be affected. Despite popular belief, hepatitis isn’t spread exclusively through sexual intercourse. Hepatitis is caused by various factors ranging from toxins, some medications, and heavy alcohol use.
Trichomoniasis or trich is a tremendously common sexually transmitted disease caused by the infection Trichomonas vaginalis–a one-celled protozoan parasite. This parasite passes between people during genital contact, either through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. What this means is trich can be passed between multi and same-sex intercourse. If left untreated, this STD can cause complications during pregnancy as well as increase the person’s chances of HIV and various STIs.
Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus–a virus that is similar to smallpox. It is spread through close contact with an infected person’s skin lesions, bodily fluids, or respiratory droplets. Common symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, fever, and a rash. As you can see, is it not exclusively spread during sexual intercourse.
