Blood-Related Disorders

Wednesday, 30 June 2021 by 24-7 Labs

The study of blood and blood-related diseases is known as hematology. Blood-related disorders include problems occurring with white blood cells, platelets, red blood cells, blood vessels, bone marrow, lymph nodes, and associated proteins. Let’s develop a deeper understanding of various blood-related disorders.

Anemia

According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, anemia is the most common blood disorder in America. A decrease in the production of red blood cells causes Anemia leading to a reduction in levels of oxygen during transportation. Unexplained weakness, fatigue, dizziness, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, pale skin, and headaches are some of the symptoms associated with anemia. Individuals suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disease, cancers, liver disease, and inflammatory bowel disease are at a greater risk of developing anemia. Following are the various types of anemia.

  1. Iron-deficiency anemia- The deficiency of iron can lead to severe problems, especially during pregnancy and childbirth.
  2. Vitamin-deficiency anemia- Pernicious anemia arises due to the deficiency of vitamin B12 (folic acid).
  3. Aplastic anemia- A condition in which bone marrow is unable to produce sufficient amounts of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
  4. Hemolytic anemia- Infections, autoimmune diseases, and congenital abnormalities cause hemolytic anemia wherein blood cells break up in the bloodstream or spleen.
  5. Sickle cell anemia- A condition in which red blood cells become sickle-shaped and clog the circulation flow.

Blood Cancer

Generally, blood cancers start in the bone marrow and affect the production and function of blood cells. There are three main types of blood cancers.

  1. Lymphoma- Lymphocytes are the cells that help in fighting infections. The body’s ability to fight infections is disturbed in lymphoma. Furthermore, it leads to the weakening of the immune system.
  2. Leukemia- Leukemia is the cancer of bone marrow leading to the abnormal production of white blood cells.
  3. Myeloma- Myeloma is the cancer of plasma cells that leads to the weakening of the immune system.

Hemophilia

Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder that occurs when an individual lacks certain proteins (clotting factors). The common signs and symptoms of hemophilia include bleeding gums, blood from urine and stool, arboreal bruises, blurred vision, neck pain, pain in joints, and Irritability.

Conclusion

Blood disorders can affect the overall health of an individual. Anemia, blood clots, blood cancer, and bleeding disorders are the various abnormal conditions that arise due to the insufficient production of blood.  Hematology is the study of blood and blood-related diseases. Anemia is a condition that arises due to a reduction in the number of red blood cells. Red blood cells carry an iron-pigment protein, hemoglobin, that is responsible for supplying oxygen to the lungs and tissues. Various types of anemias include Iron-deficiency anemia, pernicious anemia, hemolytic anemia, sickle cell anemia, and aplastic anemia. Maintaining a proper diet helps in improving health by supplying essential minerals and nutrients. Blood cancers can arise when there is an abnormal growth of cells of bone marrow, spleen, or lymph nodes. To treat blood-related disorders, healthcare professionals may prescribe medications such as erythropoietin injections, vitamin supplements, etc.

Why You Should Test for Anemia if You Have PCOD

Monday, 12 April 2021 by 24-7 Labs

Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a common health condition affecting every 5-10 women out of 100, in the age group of 12-45 years. Generally, this problem occurs in women whose hormones are imbalanced. It causes irregular menstrual cycles and leads to the possibility of facing difficulties in getting pregnant and during pregnancy.

Due to the imbalance in sex hormones, the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) produces more androgens, which causes pimples, growth of extra facial and body hair, and no ovulation in women. Instead of releasing the eggs, they form very small cysts in the ovary that enlarges the ovary, thus causing PCOD. The main symptoms of this disease are body weakness, lower levels of hemoglobin (anemia), weight gain, acne, irregular and heavy periods, dark and extra hairs on the face, chest, belly, and back. Depression and infertility are symptoms in extreme cases.

The common medical treatment to PCOD focuses the concerns such as infertility, acne, obesity, or hirsutism. It can be normalized by lowering blood glucose levels, restoring infertility, treating hirsutism or acne, restoring regular menstruation.

Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) causes Anemia?

If you have the above-mentioned symptoms, test for Anemia.

It is one of the most common diseases in women. This is so, as it causes heavy bleeding and can result in iron deficiency or anemia. Usually, the reasons for this disease vary from woman to woman. But heavy bleeding is the most common reason in every affected woman. Basically, this disease is passed on through the bloodlines, in simple words, they are inherited. It is important to have an eye on the iron intake because PCOD causes a lack of iron in the body.

Are you experiencing the same symptoms? If yes, you should consult a specialist. Heavy bleeding in women causes anemia that can turn you weak. Therefore, you must have a test of anemia if you have PCOD. Consult your doctor and increase your iron intake. You should eat iron-rich food such as spinach, eggs, and broccoli. Do not increase iron intake without asking your doctor. These might have adverse reactions to the body. The heavy loss of blood increases the iron requirement in the body. While there is less intake of iron and erotic food. Thus, it is most prevalent among girls during the time of adolescence and young adulthood.

Anemia and Tests

Anemia is a situation that lowers the hemoglobin in the blood and subsequently a lesser amount of oxygen. It occurs because of improper production of red blood cells (RBC). Hemoglobin is the reduced form of iron. Also, iron carries oxygen from the lungs to all the body tissues. Lower iron in the body causes weakness, shortness of breath, chest pain, and tiredness. However, a test for anemia is necessary when you suffer from PCOD. The body needs a good amount of iron to circulate blood. You need to make sure of the need for iron intake through testing of anemia.

When you have a test for anemia, your doctor will diagnose the cause and severity of the condition. Untreated anemia may cause complications, so you need proper treatment to get rid of it. To diagnose anemia in the body, the doctor will consider the following tests: Complete Blood Count, iron, ferritin measure, reticulocyte count, and peripheral smear. The doctor may provide you with ways to treat your iron deficiency, by recommending a healthy iron diet, or iron supplements. The dosage will depend on your capacity and deficiency of iron.

Conclusion

PCOD is a growing concern in the women of the current generation. It causes anemia or iron deficiency that leads to breathing problems and tiredness. Due to menstrual disorder or heavy bleeding, the body needs more iron, to regulate its function. This will be clear by an anemia test. Therefore, it needs to be diagnosed and treated as earlier as possible with proper professional guidance.
